The world football governing body, FIFA, through its president Gianni Infantino, has issued a strong warning following an alleged racism incident during a UEFA Champions League match between Real Madrid CF and Benfica. The incident reportedly involved Madrid star Vinícius Junior, who claimed he was subjected to racist remarks by a Benfica player after scoring the winning goal.

The match, played at Estádio da Luz in Lisbon on February 17, ended in a 1-0 victory for Real Madrid, courtesy of Vinícius Jr’s goal in the 50th minute. However, what followed sparked widespread debate.

After celebrating his goal, Vinícius was confronted by Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni, who allegedly made remarks while covering his mouth with his shirt. Vinícius immediately approached the referee, insisting that he had been subjected to discriminatory language.

The referee initiated the anti-racism protocol, temporarily halting the match for approximately 10 minutes as discussions took place among players and officials from both sides.

Vinícius later posted on social media that “racism is true weakness,” describing such acts as a disgrace to the game. His teammates, including Kylian Mbappé and Trent Alexander-Arnold, publicly supported him. Mbappé alleged that Prestianni had referred to Vinícius using offensive language multiple times before the confrontation. Prestianni has denied making any racist remarks, calling the incident a misunderstanding. UEFA has since launched a formal ethical and disciplinary investigation.

In its statement, FIFA expressed deep concern and reaffirmed that there is no place for racism in football or society at large. Infantino emphasized that FIFA will work closely with relevant authorities to ensure appropriate action is taken against anyone found guilty of such behavior. He added that anti-racism protocols will continue to be strictly enforced.

Anti-racism groups have also criticized the response of Benfica coach José Mourinho, whose remarks addressing the allegations have drawn backlash from some advocacy organizations.

The incident has reignited global debate about how to effectively combat racism in football stadiums. FIFA and UEFA now face increasing pressure to take firm action to ensure the sport remains inclusive and safe for all players, regardless of race, origin, or belief.
