The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania has taken decisive measures to address the flooding issue on the playing surface of Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam. This follows the incident on April 9, when the pitch was overwhelmed by water due to heavy rainfall shortly before the CAF Confederation Cup match between Simba SC and Al Masry of Egypt.
In response, the government announced the temporary closure of the stadium to allow for repairs and necessary upgrades aimed at improving the drainage system and ensuring the pitch remains in good condition, even during rain.
Speaking on the measures taken, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Gerson Msigwa, stated:
"The government has brought in experts from Turkey to address the challenges experienced on the playing surface, and everything will be fine very soon."
These Turkish experts have already begun assessment and specialized repair work on the pitch. With extensive experience in handling similar issues at international stadiums, their presence brings great hope to sports stakeholders in the country—especially for teams that rely on the stadium for both international and domestic matches.
Additionally, the government is continuing with other renovations around the stadium, including upgrading spectator seating, lighting systems, and locker rooms, to ensure the facility meets international standards.
This move is part of the government’s broader commitment to improving sports infrastructure in Tanzania, creating a better environment for players and fans alike, and positioning the country to host international competitions more effectively.
