High Court Declines Jurisdiction Over Yanga vs. Simba Derby Case

The High Court Sub-Registry in Dar es Salaam has withdrawn from the case seeking to stop the traditional rivalry match between Yanga and Simba, popularly known as the Kariakoo Derby, scheduled to be played on June 15, 2025, after ruling that it has no jurisdiction to hear the case.

The case was filed by a Yanga member from Iringa, Dr. Samweli Marwa Chacha, against the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) and the League Board (TPLB), seeking the cancellation of the new match schedule and for Yanga to be awarded three points.

However, TFF and TPLB, through their lawyer Rahim Shaban, raised a preliminary objection to the case, arguing that the court lacks jurisdiction to hear it.

In its ruling delivered on Friday by Judge Elizabeth Mkwizu, who heard the objection, the High Court agreed with the arguments presented by TFF and TPLB and dismissed the case.

Judge Mkwizu stated that the constitutions of both TFF and Yanga, to which the plaintiff is a member, prohibit members from taking disputes related to the management of the sport to legal courts. Instead, such matters should be handled through internal TFF mechanisms or the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
