The draw for the 2026/2027 CAF Champions League group stage has sparked widespread anxiety and excitement among football fans in Tunisia and Tanzania after African football giants Yanga SC and Tunisia's Club Africain were drawn in Group B.
The group, already dubbed the "Group of Death" by football analysts, also features two other North African heavyweights: Egypt's Zamalek SC and Algeria's MC Alger.
Photos and videos circulating online show Club Africain fans reacting with shock to the draw, particularly after Yanga were placed in their group.
Although their team is known for its strong defensive discipline this season, which helped them eliminate African giants TP Mazembe in the qualifying rounds, they are aware of the challenge of facing Yanga in the group stage.
Yanga's growing reputation across Africa is one of the main reasons behind the concern. Over the past four seasons, Yanga have demonstrated considerable maturity in CAF competitions.
Club Africain fans have not forgotten the disappointment of being eliminated by Yanga in the 2022/23 CAF Confederation Cup. Playing at home, they lost 1-0 to Wananchi, who advanced to the group stage and went on to reach the final that season, missing out on the title under the away-goals rule after a 2-2 aggregate draw against USM Alger.
According to the CAF schedule, the two giants will meet twice during the group stage. Club Africain will host Yanga SC in Tunisia between December 4 and 6, 2026.
Yanga SC will host Club Africain in the return fixture between January 22 and 24, 2027. That match will conclude the group stage and could potentially determine which team advances to the quarter-finals.
Ahead of the group stage, Yanga Communications and Media Manager Ali Kamwe has declared that the club fears no team in the group and is ready to "crush and dominate" any opponent that stands in its way.
