Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has criticised the club’s approach to spending money on player recruitment, arguing that despite significant investment, the current squad still lacks the quality and balance expected.
Speaking after Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat to Fenerbahce in the UEFA Champions League, Carragher said his main concern was not necessarily the manager but how the club’s leadership handles recruitment and squad building.
Carragher highlighted Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni as two of Liverpool’s best performers in the match. However, he questioned why these young players are making an impression in positions where the club has already spent heavily to strengthen.
He added that seeing a young midfielder earn opportunities ahead of players Liverpool spent significant sums to sign raises questions about how the club’s transfer budget has been used.
In his view, Liverpool have not spent their money as effectively as they should have, raising further concerns about the club’s recruitment decisions and its efforts to build a competitive squad.
