Tanzania’s national under-17 team, the Serengeti Boys, have found themselves in a heartbreaking situation after their fate in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations Under-17 (AFCON U17) qualifiers was decided by a coin toss, despite finishing level with Somalia on results on the pitch.
Somalia’s Draw Leaves Qualification Hanging in the Balance
The Serengeti Boys began their campaign in the 2027 AFCON U17 qualifiers for the East and Central African region (CECAFA) with a 2-0 victory over Kenya on October 10, 2026. The goals were scored by Dismass Athanas in the 28th minute and Godfrey Somi in the 57th minute.
In their second match against Somalia on October 12, 2026, the Serengeti Boys had to settle for a 1-1 draw. Somalia took an early lead through Abdikarin Abdulkadir in the first minute, before Tanzania captain Elick Yusuph equalised from the penalty spot in the 24th minute.
Following those results, Tanzania had four points from two matches, with their hopes of progressing depending on the outcome of Somalia’s final group match against Kenya.
Somalia managed to defeat Kenya 2-0 in their final group match on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. The victory took Somalia to four points, level with Tanzania.
The two teams had identical records: each had beaten Kenya 2-0 and drawn 1-1 against the other opponent. As a result, they were level on points, goals scored, goals conceded and goal difference.
A coin toss was therefore used to separate the two teams, with Somalia emerging as the lucky side.
