Lionel Messi has been awarded an honorary doctorate, Doctor Honoris Causa, by the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) in Argentina, in recognition of his contribution and legacy in football.
The ceremony took place on a special day for Messi, who is also expected to lead Argentina in his special farewell match at the Monumental Stadium later today, in what is expected to be a historic night for football fans in the country.
Tuesday has therefore become a day featuring two major moments in Messi’s life: receiving the Doctor Honoris Causa degree and later stepping onto the pitch for his farewell match with the Argentina national team.
The honour adds even more emotion to a day when Argentina’s attention is focused on the star who has played a major role in the history of the national team, leading Argentina to major titles including the Copa América and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Messi, an honorary doctorate during the day, and an Argentina farewell at night. Another historic day in the journey of one of the players who has left one of the biggest marks in football history.
