Lionel Messi is set to receive an honorary doctorate, Doctor Honoris Causa, from the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina, one of the highest honours awarded by the institution.
According to the report, Messi will receive the honour on Tuesday at an event scheduled to take place before his farewell match with the Argentina national team against Benin.
The honour comes as Messi continues to leave a major mark on the history of Argentine football, having played a key role in a generation that won major titles, including the Copa América and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The recognition from the University of Buenos Aires adds to the long list of awards and honours Messi has received throughout his career, not only for his achievements in football but also for his status as one of Argentina’s most internationally recognised figures.
The match against Benin is expected to carry special significance if it proves to be one of Messi’s final appearances in an Argentina shirt, giving fans another opportunity to see him lead his country before potentially bringing his international journey to an end.
