With just one step remaining to complete their qualification for the CAF Champions League (CAFCL) group stage, Simba SC are expected to be placed in Pot 2 for next week’s group-stage draw in Egypt.
The Msimbazi Reds head into Sunday’s second-leg encounter against Equatorial Guinea’s 15 de Agosto on October 25, 2026, carrying a commanding 6-1 lead from the first leg played in Dar es Salaam.
Goals from Ibrahim Doumbia, Nathaniel Chilambo, Elie Mpanzu, Keletso Makgalwa and Anicet Oura put Simba in a strong position, giving them a 99 per cent chance of reaching the group stage. This makes Sunday’s match largely a formality, while also offering fans another opportunity for entertainment.
Even better news for Simba supporters is that the club’s position in the CAF five-year rankings is expected to secure them a place in Pot 2.
This means Simba would face just one heavyweight from Pot 1, which could feature teams such as Mamelodi Sundowns, RS Berkane, Esperance and Zamalek, provided they all qualify for the group stage.
In Pot 2, Simba could be joined by their rivals Yanga, as well as Pyramids and Al Hilal. Yanga have already qualified, while Simba, Pyramids and Al Hilal are all expected to advance after winning their respective first-leg matches.
Other African Giants Under Threat
While Simba are in a position of near certainty, the situation is different for other African giants facing crucial matches this weekend as they fight to avoid elimination. Tunisia’s Esperance de Tunis are at risk after losing the first leg 1-0 to Libya’s Asswehly SC, while South African side Mamelodi Sundowns must win at home after drawing 0-0 away against Wiliete SC.
The full group-stage draw is scheduled to take place in Cairo on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
