Simba SC head coach Steve Barker has underlined his reputation as a master tactician after guiding his side to a 2-1 victory over Yanga SC in a fiercely contested Kariakoo Derby played yesterday, October 10, at Uhuru Stadium.
In a highly competitive encounter, Barker demonstrated impressive tactical maturity and an ability to adapt to the demands of the game.
After Yanga scored an early goal, Barker responded with swift tactical adjustments that caught their opponents by surprise.
He instructed his players to maintain their attacking intensity, keeping Yanga under sustained pressure for approximately 30 minutes leading up to half-time.
In the second half, Barker refused to let his players ease off. The pressure paid off in the 67th minute when Neo Maema made amends for his first-half mistakes by equalising, before Elie Mpanzu struck the decisive second goal. Simba dominated the match across several key areas, enjoying 62 per cent possession compared with Yanga’s 38 per cent.
Simba registered 14 shots, with six on target, while Yanga managed just three attempts, only one of which was on target.
The victory further strengthens the South African coach’s record against Simba’s traditional rivals. Barker has now won two Kariakoo Derby encounters, including the Union Cup final earlier this year, drawn twice and lost once.
This season, Barker has guided Simba to victories in all seven of their opening league matches, putting them at the top of the standings with 21 points. He has now recorded 17 consecutive wins since last season and has yet to lose a league match since joining the Msimbazi Reds towards the end of 2025.
