Cape Town, Street Life and the Dangers Around Him
De Reuck grew up in Kalksteenfontein and Kensington, areas of Cape Town where life on the streets was far from easy.
Crime, drugs and gangs were part of the environment he witnessed while growing up.
Worse still, he did not have to look outside his family to see that life. His biological father and older brother had become involved in gang life and robbery.
For a young man his age, it was a trap that could have pulled him in at any moment.
But De Reuck had one thing that set him apart from many of those around him: football.
Football Became His Way Out
While some of his friends began getting involved in drugs and crime, De Reuck held on to football.
The football pitch became his place of refuge. Training became his routine. The dream of playing professional football became the reason he refused to look back.
Today, as he reflects on that journey, De Reuck does not hesitate to acknowledge just how important football was in his life.
“If I didn’t have football, 100 percent I might have gone down a different path. Football was the only thing that kept me on the right path.”
Those words carry weight because they come from someone who witnessed those surroundings firsthand.
Some of the young people he grew up with never managed to escape that trap. Some lost their lives, while others ended up in prison.
From the Streets to Mamelodi Sundowns
De Reuck’s journey was not a straight path to the top. He fought, built his reputation and eventually reached Mamelodi Sundowns, one of South Africa’s biggest clubs.
But even there, life was not easy. There were moments of rejection, limited playing opportunities and periods of waiting for a chance that sometimes seemed like it would never come. That was when his patience was truly tested.
Instead of giving up, he continued to wait and fight. Football had already helped him escape the trap of the streets; now it was up to him to make the most of the opportunity and take his career even further.
Tanzania, Simba and a New Chapter
Eventually, his journey brought him to Tanzania. De Reuck joined Simba SC with a hunger for a fresh start and to rediscover the joy of playing football.
Tanzania was not simply another stop in his football career. It was also an opportunity to continue fulfilling something that has been a major part of his journey: helping his family.
At Simba, he was given the opportunity to showcase his ability and was later entrusted with a major leadership role.
From the streets of Cape Town to wearing the Simba jersey and taking on the captaincy, this is a journey that cannot be told through statistics on the pitch alone. Behind it lies a long history of struggle and perseverance.
