Malawian club Mighty Wanderers have suspended head coach Bob Mpinganjira indefinitely, just hours after the team suffered a 2-1 defeat to Ekhaya FC in the Airtel Top 8 final.
The decision was announced by Wanderers' management in a statement signed by Board Secretary Chancy Gondwe. The club did not provide an official reason for Mpinganjira's suspension, but the move comes immediately after the shock defeat to Ekhaya, who were appearing in their first-ever Airtel Top 8 final.
Defeat Shakes Wanderers
Ekhaya FC made history by beating Mighty Wanderers 2-1 in Sunday's final at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
For Wanderers, the result was a major setback, as the club entered the final as defending FDH Bank Premiership champions and with high hopes of lifting the Airtel Top 8 trophy.
According to Pan-Africa Football, the defeat was Wanderers' second loss in 18 matches across all competitions this season. During that run, the Nomads recorded 10 wins and six draws.
The development has raised concerns among the club's supporters at a time when Wanderers are preparing for their international fixture against Tanzania's Simba SC in the first preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.
Mabedi Brought in to Assist the Technical Bench
In another development, Wanderers have appointed former Malawi national team coach Patrick Mabedi as Technical Consultant. Mabedi was part of Yanga's technical bench last season and has also previously worked with South African giants Kaizer Chiefs.
Simba SC Waiting
The changes come just days before Wanderers begin their CAF Champions League campaign against Tanzanian giants Simba SC.
The Nomads are scheduled to host Simba SC on September 6, 2026, in the first leg of the preliminary round before travelling to Dar es Salaam for the return leg on September 13.
Wanderers now find themselves under significant pressure: they have just lost a domestic final, suspended their head coach and are simultaneously facing a major continental test against Simba.
