Simba SC defender Nathaniel Chilambo has sent a strong message to head coach Steve Barker after delivering an impressive performance in the NBC Premier League clash against Singida Black Stars, showing that he is ready to compete for a starting spot.
Chilambo was handed a starting role after defender David Kameta βDuchuβ was suspended following his red card, and he made good use of the opportunity by displaying composure and the ability to perform different roles within the team's system.
In Simba's 2-1 victory over Singida BS, Chilambo was among the players who produced a strong performance. The result also marked Simba's third consecutive away victory, making it an important result for Barker's side.
What stood out most about Chilambo was his ability to adapt his role as the match progressed. When Simba came under pressure, he operated as a right-back and fulfilled his defensive responsibilities.
However, when Simba had possession and began building attacks, Chilambo moved further into midfield to support the central area. This allowed Libasse Gueye to remain higher and attack from the flank, while Chilambo moved inside to increase the number of players in midfield.
The versatility impressed Simba fans, who got to see another dimension to a player who can offer more than just defensive duties.
For Chilambo, playing in midfield is not unfamiliar territory. He previously operated as a defensive midfielder, or number six, during his youth career. The system he used against Singida BS therefore gave him an opportunity to showcase an ability that has not regularly been seen at senior level.
Chilambo joined Simba in the previous transfer window from Azam FC and is among the players competing for a place in the starting XI. His performance against Singida BS could now give Barker another reason to consider him in his long-term plans.
However, competition for the position remains intense. Captain Shomari Kapombe is still recovering from injury, while David Kameta βDuchuβ is expected to return after serving his red-card suspension.
That leaves Barker with an important decision to make: who should start at right-back for Simba when Kapombe returns β Kapombe, Duchu or Chilambo?
