Simba head coach Steve Barker says the CECAFA Kagame Cup is helping him build team cohesion and improve understanding between new signings and existing players, ensuring everyone understands the club's philosophy before the new season begins.
Simba chose to use the tournament as part of their pre-season preparations. So far, the Msimbazi Reds have played one Group B match against Mogadishu City, which ended in a goalless draw.
Barker said that although the team aims to perform well in the competition, he will continue giving opportunities to all players, especially new arrivals who need time to understand his tactics and playing system.
"Preparations are going well. We want every player to understand our style of play, how we want to defend, attack, and transition quickly when we lose possession. This is a period of building the team, not just focusing on results," Barker said.
The coach also believes the new signings have increased competition within the squad, forcing every player to fight for their place in the team.
"We needed to improve quality in certain areas. The new players have different abilities and each one will bring something new to the team. Competition for places will now be stronger, and that will help us raise the team's level," he added.
In the previous match, Barker featured all of Simba's domestic signings in the starting lineup, including Nathaniel Chilambo, Kelvin Nashon, and Bakari Msimu. He later introduced Ibrahim Jabeer, Ibrahim Doumbia, and Keletso Makgalwa during the second half.
Simba will return to action today at 7:00 pm when they face Jamus FC in their second group match. Barker may give more playing time to the players who came on as substitutes in the previous game.
