Simba head coach Steve Barker’s decision to leave out all of his key players in the final NBC Premier League match against KMC is seen as a clear indication of his determination to win the CRDB Federation Cup.
Simba defeated KMC 1-0 at the KMC Complex, with Barker making over 90% changes to his usual starting lineup.
It is evident that Simba’s technical team carried out a thorough assessment and concluded that their chances of winning the league title were slim, choosing instead to channel their energy toward the CRDB Cup final against Azam FC.
The final is scheduled to take place on July 4 at Gombani Stadium in Pemba, Zanzibar.
Simba have played around five consecutive matches with an average gap of just three days, and Barker’s rotation was aimed at resting key players and keeping them fresh for the decisive clash.
After five seasons without a league title, Simba now have an opportunity to add a second trophy this campaign after already winning the Muungano Cup.
For nearly four years, Simba had failed to reach the CRDB Cup final, but this season they have managed to do so while displaying strong performances throughout the tournament.
The club also holds a strong record in the competition, having traditionally gone on to win the trophy whenever they reach the final. They will now aim to continue that dominance in Zanzibar.
