Steve Barker Explains Elie Mpanzu’s New Role in Simba Attack

Simba head coach Steve Barker has revealed tactical changes involving Elie Mpanzu, stating that the Congolese player will now primarily operate as a central striker after helping the Msimbazi Reds secure victory on Sunday, May 24, 2026.

In Simba’s last three matches, Barker has shifted Mpanzu from his previous attacking midfield and wide role into the central forward position. The adjustment has also seen natural striker Seleman Mwalimu drop to the bench.

Speaking about the change, Barker explained that Mpanzu is now considered one of the team’s main strikers and will continue to be used in that role to improve the team’s attacking quality.

Barker said he wants his attacking line to consist of fast players capable of launching quick counterattacks immediately after winning possession, especially before opponents reorganize defensively.

“Mpanzu is one of our strikers now. Sometimes he can still come from wide areas, but he will mainly play there because there is something better we want to get from him,” said Barker.

“We need more pace in attack so that when opponents lose the ball, we can quickly attack them before they are properly organized. This has been working well for us.”

In the three league matches where Mpanzu has played as a central striker, he has scored one goal and provided one assist, although some fans believe the Congolese attacker has missed several scoring opportunities.

Addressing those concerns, Barker said composure in front of goal would improve with rest, adding that fatigue has affected several players due to the demanding schedule.

“To score goals, you need a calm mind. But it’s not only Mpanzu who has missed chances. Fatigue is a major factor. Playing 16 matches in 52 days is not easy, and naturally the quality drops. This is not healthy for the players.”

“Now we will have about a week for the players to rest. We will give them some days off during this period so that when they return, we can see even better performances.”

So far this season, Mpanzu has contributed to 12 goals for Simba, scoring four and providing eight assists, while Seleman Mwalimu has been involved in nine goals with eight goals and one assist.
