Tanzania’s national team, ‘Taifa Stars’, officially begins its campaign today, Thursday, March 26, 2026, in the FIFA Series tournament taking place in Rwanda, with a match against Liechtenstein.
The FIFA Series is an international friendly competition organized by FIFA, bringing together teams from different continents to enhance competitiveness and global exposure. The 2026 edition is being held from March 25 to 31 across various countries, including Rwanda.
Taifa Stars are set to face Liechtenstein at Kigali Pele Stadium, with the match scheduled to kick off at 11:00 PM East Africa Time.
This match serves as a semi-final in the Rwanda group (Group B), where the winner will advance to the final on March 29, while the loser will compete in the third-place playoff.
Tanzania’s chance to test itself internationally
Tanzania’s participation in this tournament is seen as an important opportunity to measure its level against teams from outside Africa, particularly from Europe.
The Taifa Stars head coach, Miguel Gamondi, has assembled a squad that blends domestic-based players with those playing internationally, aiming to boost competition and overall team quality.
The team’s preparations officially began on March 22 before traveling to Kigali for the tournament.
Tournament format
In Group B, Tanzania is grouped with Liechtenstein, Aruba, and Macau, with each team playing only two matches due to FIFA’s international match calendar.
The competition is designed to give teams that rarely get international friendlies a chance to compete against nations from different continents.
