Anicet Oura’s stoppage-time goal in the second half earned Simba a valuable away point as they forced a 1-1 draw against Petro Atletico.
Despite playing with 10 men in the second half following Shomari Kapombe’s red card — after receiving a second yellow late in the opening half — coach Steve Barker’s men showed great determination. The team improved notably after Barker introduced Oura, Mwalimu, and Loemba.
Pedro Pinto had given Petro an early lead in the 13th minute with a header. The hosts dominated the first half and created more scoring opportunities, but Simba returned stronger in the second half.
The result may have disrupted Petro Atletico’s quarter-final ambitions, as they now must win their final away match against Esperance to keep their hopes alive.
Simba will conclude their campaign at home against Stade Malien in a match whose result will not affect their position in the standings.
Simba are set to finish bottom of Group D.
