Numbers never lie. Despite conceding one goal against Tunisia’s Esperance in a CAF Champions League Group D match, the 90 minutes played for the first time by Simba’s new goalkeeper, Djibrilla Kassali, stood out due to the tremendous work he delivered in Tunis.
The match, played at Hammadi Agrebi Stadium in the city of Radès, Tunis, saw Simba lose 1–0 — their third consecutive defeat in the competition — leaving them bottom of the group without a single point, while Esperance climbed to second place with five points.
Kassali, who was signed by Simba during the mini transfer window open until January 30 to replace injured Moussa Camara, played the full 90 minutes in Simba’s third group-stage match.
The Niger international made three crucial saves and appeared calm between the posts despite minor challenges, particularly in communication with his defensive wall. He registered a goalkeeping rating of 0.08 compared to Esperance goalkeeper Ben Said, who recorded 0.04.
Beyond his shot-stopping duties, Kassali also attempted to initiate attacks. He displayed good passing ability, completing 19 of his 24 passes — a 79% success rate — and registered 30 touches during the match.
However, his accuracy dropped in the final third of the pitch, where he completed just one of three passes (33%). His long passes were 58% accurate, completing seven out of 12.
His composure in goal prompted praise from fans on social media, with many expressing a sense of relief that stability had returned between the posts following the absence of Camara and Yakoub Suleiman, who was signed at the start of the season before suffering an injury while on national duty with Taifa Stars at FCON 2025.
Records show that Camara’s first appearance for Simba in the competition last season came on September 20, 2025, during the preliminary rounds, when he led the team to a 1–0 win over Gaborone United, making two crucial saves.
Last season, Camara helped Simba reach the CAF Confederation Cup final, where they lost 3–1 on aggregate to Morocco’s RS Berkane over two legs. Camara finished second in the clean sheets ranking with six, behind RS Berkane goalkeeper Mohammed Munir, who recorded nine.
It is difficult to blame Kassali for the goal conceded in the match, as it stemmed from an error by right-back Shomary Kapombe, who was outwitted by Burkinabé forward Jack Diarra following a pass from Ben Hamida.
However, Kassali will have another 90 minutes next weekend against the same opponents, Esperance — a match in which Simba will need his quality to revive their hopes of reaching the CAF Champions League quarterfinals, despite a disastrous start that has produced their worst-ever record in the first three matches.
Simba began the campaign with a 1–0 home defeat to Angola’s Petro Atlético, followed by a 2–1 away loss to Mali’s Stade Malien, before the recent defeat that further deepened their troubles.
Former Simba and Azam FC goalkeeping coach Daniel Cadena believes the Nigerien shot-stopper will be a key asset for the Msimbazi Reds during this difficult period, saying: “This is a phase that any club can go through; the most important thing is to continue believing in the plan, and everything will eventually fall into place.”
He added: “He looks like a good goalkeeper with sufficient experience, but I have always said that keeping the goal safe is not only the goalkeeper’s responsibility — the whole team must function well, especially the defense. If he continues to be trusted, he will deliver, just as Camara and others did.”
