Yesterday, Simba faced Esperance in Tunisia in the third-round group stage match of the CAF Champions League (CAFCL), Group D.
The result was not favorable for the Msimbazi Reds, who lost 1–0, putting their hopes of reaching the quarterfinals at risk.
In the match, Simba head coach Steve Barker gave some of the new signings from this winter transfer window a chance, and they did not disappoint.
Goalkeeper Djibrilla Kassali stood out, earning praise despite conceding the goal, which was not his fault. He made several crucial saves while demonstrating skill in initiating attacks with both long and short passes.
Simba fans had been concerned after Kassali was signed at the expense of Moussa Camara, but Kassali quickly alleviated those fears.
Left-back Nickson Kibabage played the full 90 minutes and showed excellent form, as did winger Libassa Gueye, who came on in the second half.
Attacking midfielder Clatous Chama, known as the “Mwamba of Lusaka,” was also introduced in the second half to strengthen Simba’s attack.
Central defender Ismael Toure did not feature in the match, as Barker opted to start Wilson Nangu and Rushine De Reuck in the center of defense, with De Reuck earning high marks for his performance.
There is no doubt that these new players will add strength to Simba’s squad in upcoming matches across all competitions.
Barker has been tasked with building a strong Simba side, and he has begun that work now. The management has not placed heavy pressure on him in the CAF Champions League, but questions will arise if Simba fails to perform well in the NBC Premier League.
