The 90 minutes of the opening Group D CAF Champions League match between Simba and Petro Atletico have ended with the visitors taking a 1–0 victory at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.
Bernardo Dias scored the lone goal for Petro Atletico in the 78th minute after a build-up that started from the back, in a sequence where Anthony Mligo appeared to be fouled but the referee allowed play to continue.
Simba will have themselves to blame for failing to collect all three points, having squandered at least five chances, including two clear opportunities missed by Morice Abraham and Elie Mpanzu.
Simba’s General Manager, Dimitar Pantev, started the match without a natural striker, only introducing Jonathan Sowah early in the second half.
The result is disappointing—especially at home. Pantev and his squad must now chase three crucial away points in their next match against Stade Malien in Mali later next week.
This upcoming match is vital for Simba to keep their hopes of securing a quarter-final spot alive.
