Following Simba’s match against Gor Mahia yesterday at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium — part of the Simba Day celebrations — opinions have been mixed regarding the team’s performance.
The most important outcome was victory, with goals from Abdulrazak Hamza and Steven Mukwala securing a 2-0 win and ending the day on a high note for Simba fans.
Even though it was only a friendly, had Simba failed to win, the debate would likely have been much louder, regardless of how well they played.
Head coach Fadlu Davids explained after the game that he approached the match strategically, aiming to give every player some minutes on the pitch.
Some players were given limited minutes while others played longer, depending on their readiness. For example, Shomari Kapombe was not used at all after returning from national team duty, while striker Steven Mukwala played around 20 minutes and scored Simba’s second goal shortly after coming on in the second half.
In the first half, Simba played well, with new signings such as Naby Camara, Anthony Mligo, and Rushine De Reuck impressing the fans.
About 15 minutes into the second half, Fadlu made several substitutions, which clearly disrupted the team’s cohesion. This allowed Gor Mahia to look stronger, especially during the final 30 minutes.
However, despite Gor Mahia’s control of possession in that period, Simba remained more dangerous in attack, with a solid defensive line led by Rushine. In the first half, he was partnered with Caraboua Chamou, who was later replaced by Yusuph Kagoma. Kagoma slotted into midfield, forcing Hamza to drop deeper.
It is clear that yesterday’s match cannot be taken as the true measure of Simba’s readiness for the new season, since it was primarily used for tactical experimentation.
Without a doubt, the Community Shield clash against Yanga on September 16 will provide a clearer picture of what Simba fans can expect as the new season kicks off next week.
One thing is certain: Simba are preparing seriously to reclaim silverware for the Msimbazi faithful.
