Tanzania’s national football team, *Taifa Stars*, have been officially eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers after falling 1-0 to Niger at the New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar.
Despite going into the match needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, Stars looked off the pace. Their performance lacked the urgency expected from a side in a must-win game, with low morale evident throughout much of the contest.
Player fatigue was likely a factor, as many members of the squad had only recently returned from representing Tanzania in the 2024 CHAN tournament, leaving them physically and mentally drained.
The loss ended Tanzania’s dream of progressing, with Morocco already securing top spot in Group E and direct qualification. Niger’s win also avenged their first-round defeat to Stars, when they lost 1-0.
Following the match, Simba SC players who featured for Taifa Stars are expected to immediately rejoin their club camp in preparation for *Simba Day* tomorrow. The Simba players involved were Yacoub Suleiman, Shomari Kapombe, Wilson Nangu, Yusuph Kagoma, and Selemani Mwalimu.
