Simba SC have strengthened their squad in the transfer market by officially unveiling attacking midfielder Neo Maema, formerly of South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns. The unveiling took place yesterday during the team’s pre-season camp in Egypt, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the star player with the Reds of Msimbazi.
Maema, nicknamed the ‘left foot magician’, joined Sundowns in 2021 from Bloemfontein Celtic. Over four seasons in Pretoria, he made a total of 120 appearances, scoring 13 goals and providing 14 assists in league matches.
His best campaign came in the 2022/23 season, where he netted six goals across competitions—five in the league and one in the CAF Champions League. The following season (2023/24), he focused more on tactical discipline, scoring once and contributing two assists in the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL).
In total, Maema has featured in over 180 professional matches, recording 18 goals and 22 assists. Notably, he is not a natural striker, meaning his contributions are judged not just on scoring but also on his creativity, playmaking, and ability to provide scoring opportunities for teammates. He often operates as a central attacking midfielder or occasionally from the flanks.
Beyond club football, Maema recently captained South Africa’s national team in the 2024 CHAN tournament. There, he scored one goal and assisted in two others, showcasing his ability to handle big responsibilities even on the international stage.
Simba fans are now eagerly anticipating a midfield transformation with Maema’s arrival. His versatility to play as a number 10 or winger will provide coach Fadlu Davids with tactical flexibility, while his precise passing and gifted left foot are expected to inject more creativity into the squad.
It is clear that Simba SC have added another vital weapon for the upcoming season. Maema, alongside other new signings, is fully aware of the big task ahead. The fans’ expectations remain high.
