The controversy surrounding the Kariakoo Derby match between Yanga and Simba has reached Parliament, where the Government has stated that it cannot intervene, as the game of football is governed by both national and international regulations.
This statement came following a supplementary question posed by the Member of Parliament for Makete (CCM), Festo Sanga, during a Q&A session in Parliament on June 11, 2025. Sanga stated that strengthening the national team includes ensuring that sports laws and procedures are adhered to.
"Our league is approaching its end, but there has been tension between these two teams (Yanga and Simba) and the TFF (Tanzania Football Federation) leadership. What is the Government’s position?" asked Sanga.
Hon. Mwinjuma responded by saying that, as Members of Parliament are aware, football activities are under the jurisdiction of both national and international authorities.
"We have consistently emphasized that the Government should not directly interfere in the operations of these activities in order to avoid potential sanctions, such as being banned by FIFA (the International Football Federation), especially now that statistically our country is performing very well in the management of football activities," he said.
He stated that the management and supervision of football activities in the country fall under the TFF and the Tanzania Premier League Board (TPLB).
He added that even the information presented in Parliament is obtained from these authorities regarding the match.
After the postponement of match number 184 between Yanga and Simba, which was initially scheduled for March 8, the game is now set to be played this weekend on June 15. The League Board has confirmed that there will be no change to that date, following a meeting with the host team Yanga held on Monday.
Simba continues its preparations for the match, as the team known as “The Lion” needs all three points to strengthen its position in the race for this season’s championship.
